Residential Summer String Camp - Electives
ElectivesThe String Camp tutors come from a wide range of backgrounds. At the camp, they may offer an introduction to an unusual musical style you don't know, advanced technique in a style you do know, or the chance to play with ensembles other than the stereotypical string quartet. However, be aware that the String Camp always focuses on classical music. The electives are to give a little variety. If you're considering attending the camp solely to attend an elective, we suggest you instead seek out a teacher or event that covers the subject in detail.
Celtic FiddlingColin MacLeod has run a Celtic (Scottish and Irish) Fiddling elective since 2007. Colin is the fiddler on the CD Roaming Free. If you are interested in attending this elective please download the music early, so as to have time to set it up - preferably in a folder. You will get most benefit from Colin's advice on the style if you learn to play the basic tunes as written. If printing double-sided, or putting single pages in a folder, make sure the first leaf has the contents page on the front and 'A - Set 1 - Jigs' on the back. This will mean each set covers a double-page spread, avoiding page turns. Click on the links below to download the music for your instrument.
For those without access to a printer, this music will be available, bound in folders, at the camp. Copies cost $10 to cover expenses. If you want to purchase a copy and have it mailed to you, mark the appropriate circle on page 2 of your application form, or contact Mimi Graham - (03) 6367 8286 or 0409 141 970.
ImprovisationMost of us have at some time lost our place in an orchestra and resorted to making things up. Some musicians do this all the time, and call it 'Improvisation'. Karlin Love taught this in 2010 and will return in 2011. Karlin is a founding member of the Chordwainers, an ensemble that play improvised music on improvised instruments. |
